i'm a bad blogger and this post is horrendously late.
our extended practices class went on a trip to the pacific mall in markham, ontario. this was quite the experience. it was one of the few times in my life where i've felt like the minority. pacific mall is an asian mall and the largest in canada if i am correct.
as soon as we walked in the door everyone was staring at us. i mean absolutely everyone. the security guards, shop owners, people shopping, employees at the restaurants, that grouchy woman who yelled at us for putting garbage into the wrong bin in the food court - everyone.
one of my projects for this trip was to leave post-it notes with feel-good sayings (the complete opposite of how i felt on that trip) around the mall. when i went into stores i felt like i was stealing something even though all i wanted to do was leave something behind. taking pictures in stores - even with your blackberry - is not an easy task.
here are a few of the images i collected through out the day. i installed them (along with many others) in a grid formation for the critique.
another project is one michelle c. and i worked on together. we asked shop owners to take our photograph. here is what we ended up with.
i think i'd call that a success. they were all so cooperative and kind. i finally started to feel welcome...
but that ended when a security guard escorted our class off the property. just another day in the life of an art student.
